Laundry Room Remodel – Part 1

Chino the Handyman stopped by last night to drop off some wood for the new laundry room remodel.

It was pretty much agreed by everyone the current laundry room was possibly the worst placed laundry room on the planet. It was essentially a square box placed in between a home office space and a family room. With french doors.

So we are tearing it down and putting up 2 new walls so you actually have an office space with four walls and a laundry room that looks like it belongs there. Pretty clever eh?

Ever since our budget meeting, Chino has turned into a total tightwad.

So when Chino was telling me we could save a penny by drawing the floor plan for the laundry room on the wall instead of using a piece of paper, Cameron {the cutest carpenter on the planet} just looked the other way. Which is probably a good thing seeing as Cameron would have only made the situation worse if he just stared at his boss {Chino} in disbelief.

The french doors are being reused {as office doors} and the cabinets and sink were recycled.

See all those studs? Those will be removed and 5 feet of floor space will be gained in the family room. The family room as it is right now is pretty tiny. But once we fix the laundry area and demo the giant and outdated corner fireplace {I’ll post pictures of that area soon} it should all come together and have a bigger, better flow to it.

P.S. YES, this means not only do I not have use of a kitchen, but I also won’t have a laundry room for the next 6-8 weeks either. 🙂 Good times!

Buttermilk Cornbread Recipe

Since I seem to find a lot of chili recipes I love and the whole family gobbles up, I’m always on the lookout for great cornbread recipes to serve on the side. This one was a huge hit. I think it’s the buttermilk that just gives it the edge. Normally my family is having seconds of the chili, but tonight at dinner the chili took a backseat to the cornbread. We might have even had thirds!

Ingredients

1/2 cup butter, melted
2/3 cup sugar
2 eggs, slightly beaten
1 cup buttermilk {How to Make Buttermilk}
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1 cup cornmeal
1 cup flour
1/2 teaspoon salt

Directions

Preheat oven to 375 F. Line an 8 inch square pan with parchment paper {cooking spray} and set aside.

In a medium mixing bowl, combine melted butter and sugar. Stir in eggs and beat until blended. In a separate bowl, combine buttermilk with baking soda and then combine both mixtures. Stir in cornmeal, flour, and salt until well combined {a few lumps will remain}. Pour batter into prepared baking dish.

Bake 25 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Serve with your favorite chili, like one of the awesome recipes below:

Small Towns in America – Sturbridge, Massachusetts

I was going through some pictures of The Girl {yes, nostalgia has set in} and came across some from our trip to Sturbridge, Massachusetts last winter. I shared some pictures of the Sturbridge Village Living History Museum last year, but as I scrolled through all of the pictures, I realized I never told you how cool the whole town was.

Sturbridge is a tiny little town. It was first settled in 1729, but still only has about 7,800 residents. The size totally adds to it’s charm, though. It’s a totally picturesque village, it kind of reminded me of the movie, Funny Farm with Chevy Chase. It’s so perfect.

I took pictures and we bought mugs at Sturbridge Pottery. All of the pieces were unique, hand thrown, one of a kinders {Shakespeare made up words all of the time, so I’m pretty sure I can make up “kinders”}. How often does that happen anymore?

We had lunch at the Publick House Historic Inn. The Publick House is one of those quiet little Inn’s that would make an awesome weekend getaway if you lived in the area. It was opened in 1771, and hosted notable guests like George Washington, Benjamin Franklin all the way to present day actors like John Travolta and Bill Murray. The dining room serves classic “yankee” dishes. We had probably the best pot roast and fish and chips on the planet.

If you don’t have time to stop for a full meal, do yourself a favor and at least stop at the Bake Shoppe. Coffee, tea, and pastries. Life does not get better, I promise.

I’m so glad I got to share this perfect town with The Girl. Ah, life is bitter-sweet.
