Yesterday I couldn’t help but notice all the miniature gardens when my buddy El Presidente were at the Northwest Flower and Garden Show. Talk about total eye candy for a gardener on a cold winters day.

The attention to detail was amazing. Tiny pots, tiny statues, tiny rocks.

Check out this 12th man miniature garden. It’s like a picture from an I Spy book.

The plants used in the miniature gardens varied from succulents, to bonsai trees, to all different kinds of moss.

This Australian astroturf was VERY popular.

If you live in the Pacific Northwest you can pretty much find something similar in your backyard or while out on a nature walk. Otherwise the Home Depot and local nurseries sell it the stuff for around $3 – $4 for a 3×3 pot.

I love how the creator of this miniature garden used a tea light for their fire pit and the exposed tree roots are pretty awesome too.

I am in love.

After seeing all the miniature gardens on display, I think I totally need to make one. In fact later today I’m going to collect some moss from the backyard and make one. Stay tuned!

Cheesy Pull Apart Bread

Because we’re right in the middle of soup season {not that there’s ever a bad time for soup!}, I thought I’d whip up a bread recipe that will go perfectly with all your favorite soups!

Holy cats this bread was so good I should have made 2 {or 3, or 4}. Saving some for our dinnertime soup was really hard. It’s a good thing I was home alone when I made it or it never would have survived 5 minutes near all my family. Go make this cheesy goodness and report back on whether you’re as obsessed with it now as I am.

I’m also thinking of new ingredients to add. You can really go crazy and stuff your bread with all sorts of cheeses and spices. This is going to be fun!

Ingredients

1 unsliced loaf of sourdough bread
12 ounces Provolone cheese, thinly sliced
1 stick butter, melted
1/2 cup chives, finely chopped

Directions

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line a baking sheet with foil and set aside {I use a Silpat. It’s the only way to go!}.

Make criss-cross cuts on the top of your loaf of bread without cutting through the bottom crust. To do this, look down at your loaf of bread and make a series of top to bottom cuts. Then carefully make a series of side to side cuts. This step may be tricky, so be careful not to cut too deeply.

Take cheese slices and insert them between cuts in the bread. In a small bowl, mix butter and chives and then drizzle over the bread. Wrap in foil and bake for 15 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 10 minutes. Pair with your favorite soup and enjoy.

How to Grow Rhubarb {Start to Finish}

I was at my local farm and garden store yesterday and spotted RHUBARB CROWNS!! You know what this means right? It’s almost time to get busy gardening people! Wahooooo.

If you have never grown rhubarb before, it’s super easy. In fact it’s so easy it’s one of my favorite things to grow. And it looks cool too, which is like a little added bonus if you ask me.

Here are some helpful tips on how to grow rhubarb:

Brief description: Rhubarb is a cool season, perennial crop and typically grows between May – September. Once planted, rhubarb plants may remain productive for up to 10 -15 years.

Where to Plant : Plant rhubarb in well drained soil that has been enriched with high organic matter {I use chicken fertilizer}. You should give each plant at least 1 yard of space {in all directions} to grow.

Planting Rhubarb Crowns: Cover the crowns with 2 inches of soil. If you plant rhubarb crowns too deep, it could delay production. Press the soil firmly around the roots and give it a drink.

How to Harvest: Rhubarb stalks should not be harvested the first year. For best results, only harvest a few stalks the second year and by the third year you can harvest as much as you need.

To harvest rhubarb, cut the stalk at the soil line. You can cut all stalks at one time, or harvest them as you need them. Once the rhubarb plant starts producing slender stalks, that is your cue that nutrient reserves for the plant are low and you need to stop harvesting.
