I’m not sure how it is in your house, but Lucy is like one of the family around here. Alright, so she’s more spoiled than both of my human children combined. So it would make sense that we’d finally get around to having a giveaway just for the special 4-legged friend{s} in your life. And honestly, it’s a good thing Lucy can’t talk, because I suspect we’d never hear the end of her love for Zuke’s all-natural dog treats. We’ve been giving them to her since she was a pup and she thinks it’s Christmas every time she gets one.

We’ve tried other brands of treats and they just don’t measure up. There are some brands she all out refuses to eat, but she has never turned down a Zuke’s treat! We’ve given Lucy Puggle many of Zuke’s varieties over the last year, and while she’s really liked all of them, I think her favorites are the Z-Filets and the Jerky Naturals. The main ingredient in both is meat {meat is 80% of the treat in the Z-fillets!}, and that meat is carefully chosen so they know its source is trustworthy and they know it’s safe. That’s so important to me when choosing a treat to feed an animal I love like family.

And they are clearly Lucy approved. I mean just look at that tongue. She thinks Zuke’s treats are lip-smacking good!

Smith Brothers Milk $11.16

Getting your milk delivered is RAD people, totally RAD. Shuffling outside in 40 degree weather at 8am in your pj’s to collect groceries off your porch is the best thing ever.

I sent The Girl to the store for lunch supplies and this is what she came back with. Had I sent Monkey Boy we would have had a totally different picture. 😉

About those eggs. Remember last month when I told you how we thinned our flock of chickens? Well apparently we gave away our best egg layers. Which wouldn’t have been a problem if Lucy the Puggle Dog hadn’t suddenly developed a 2 egg a day habit. Yep, that sweet little pup has us wrapped around her little paw and I now find myself scrambling her up 2 eggs every morning for breakfast.

Hopefully once the days get a little longer all the chickens will start laying again. But until then, I might have to buy Lucy a carton of eggs every once in a while.

Backyard Garden

Last week I pulled up a few baby parsnips and carrots for a hearty soup.

That’s it. That’s all I bought. Obviously it wasn’t a stock up on anything kind of week. But that’s the beauty of waiting for a good deal I guess.

What Do the PLU codes on Stickers of Fruits and Veggies Mean?

Have you ever wondered what the numbers on those little stickers on your produce mean? They are called PLU codes {price look-up codes} and originally were meant to help the seller price and sell the item accurately. You may already know that the codes can tell how the produce was grown, but they are not always reliable.

The stickers are not required, and if a seller is not planning on pricing genetically modified foods differently, they will occasionally leave the first number off of the sticker {since the codes are really for the sellers, this is not really a crazy violation}. Overall, PLU’s can be a great guide to telling you how your food was grown, but just remember, produce with conventionally grown PLU’s can still be potentially genetically modified.

Here’s the 411 on deciphering the numbers:

PLU’s consist of 5 numbers. Often, when the first number is a 0, they just leave it off of the PLU entirely. PLU’s with 4 digits or that start with a 0, tell you that the produce was grown conventionally with the use of pesticides.
If the 5 digit number starts with an 8, the item is genetically modified.
If the 5 digit number starts with a 9, the produce was organically grown.
