When you’re attempting to grow tons of food in your garden, there are a lot of gardening tools involved. And it doesn’t seem to matter how many I own or buy, I always find myself needing an extra set of hands. I’ll head out to the garden and weed; I need a place to put the weeds. I harvest a junk ton of zucchini every year; I need a place to put the zucchini. I pluck a bumper crop of pears off my trees and am left scrambling to push a box around to collect them all. And then I discovered the Roo apron. HOLY CATS! How have I gardened this long without it?

The good people of Roo Aprons sent me one to try {Roo Apron, like kangaROO pouch. Get it. Clever, right?!}. I have to admit I was skeptical. How could a silly apron really store enough to be useful to me when harvesting? But then I used it to pick apples and let me tell you Bob, it was the coolest thing ever. Way easier than lugging around a bag or box to collect them in. I didn’t have to carry anything else around except myself. How awesome is that?

I put the apron on and loaded that apron to the max. It was still comfortable. The straps weren’t digging into my shoulders and it was so stinkin easy to use. I piled all the apples I wanted into the pouch and then when I was ready, I simply pulled the cord and easily released the apples. Here are a couple of cool things about the Roo Apron:

White Chocolate Cranberry Cookies

I’ve had {and loved} all sorts of cranberry cookies and I’ve had {and loved} all sorts of white chocolate chip cookies. This is the first time I’ve combined them and I have no idea why I waited this long. It’s like magic in a cookie. All of the best things in a cookie colliding. They were tasty. I’d highly recommend you whip up a batch or two.

Ingredients
1 1/2 sticks {12 tablespoons} unsalted butter, softened
1 cup sugar
1 cup dried cranberries {I used sweetened}
1 large egg
2 tablespoon orange juice
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 2/3 cups flour
1 {11 oz} bag white chocolate chips

Directions

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line baking sheets with parchment paper or use silpats.

In a large bowl, mix butter and sugar until fully combined, mashing out any lumps if necessary. Stir in the dried cranberries, egg, orange juice, vanilla, baking powder, cinnamon, ginger, and salt until smooth. Stir in flour and chips. Carefully fold in the cranberries and fully incorporate. If the dough is too crumbly and won’t hold together, you can add a teaspoon or two of milk.

Drop 1-1.5 tablespoon-size balls of dough about 2 1/2 inches apart on the prepared baking sheets. Bake 10 to 13 minutes or until the cookies are almost almost firm when pressed in the middle. Cool completely on wire racks. Gobble up!

Friday Night at the Movies – Mountain Men

Tonight, I am going to try out a History channel series called Mountain Men. It is about three men who choose to live with very little monetary income and make their survival off of the land.

I think it will be pretty interesting to see how modern day world translates into their desire to live off of the grid. Each of the men have slightly different stories–two of them have families. I am always amazed at people who make the commitment to do this sort of thing–sometimes, I even wish I had what it took.

How to Dehydrate Canned Pineapple

This just might be the easiest recipe I’ll ever post. It take just TWO steps! And dehydrated pineapple is seriously awesome people. If you’ve never tried it, you’re totally missing out. The HH eats dehydrated pineapple like candy {yep, it tastes that good}, throw it in a recipe when you’re baking or keep it in the car in a zip baggie to munch on. And did I mention there are only TWO steps involved in making it. Go forth and dehydrate!

Step 1: Open can. Step 2: Spread pineapple evenly on dehydrator racks.

Turn on the dehydrator, set at 135 degrees and go clean your house, run a marathon or take a long nap because it could take anywhere from 8 to 16 hours to dehydrate. I know. Huge range of time. Just check the consistency of the fruit throughout the dehydrating process. If the inside of the pineapple is free of moisture, drying is complete. Drying time depends on the size of fruit pieces and how many are in the dehydrator at once.
