DIY Dishwasher Tablets

I love the convenience of dishwasher tablets, but the price is just crazy. So lately I’ve been making my own, and guess what? Making your own dishwasher tablets is super easy, and it doesn’t break the bank either.

You’ll Need:

1 Cup Borax
1 Cup Arm & Hammer Washing Soda
1/2 Cup Epsom Salt
3/4 Cup Lemon Juice

Directions:

Mix the first 3 ingredients together in a large bowl. Add the lemon juice and mix thoroughly. You want to get the consistency wet enough to mold, but not too wet that it will fall apart. You may have to add a little more lemon juice to achieve it.

Because they dry pretty quickly, and I have major OCD, I like to place the mixture into 1″ square ice cube trays to make the tablets uniform. {Just don’t fill the ice cube trays up to the top, or the detergent door won’t close on your dishwasher.} I have found that a 1 tablespoon cookie scoop is just the perfect amount to use.

Once you have the DIY dishwasher detergent in the ice cube trays, give the trays a little shake to even out the portions. Allow the tablets to dry for a few hours and then put them into an airtight container until ready to use.

Backyard Garden Plot Pictures – Week 40 of 52

Yesterday I spent about 8 hours in the garden trimming hedges, pulling up spent tomato plants and basically cleaning up the garden beds. It looks pretty bare out there now, but hopefully I’ll be able to get a few more fall vegetables planted before it’s too late.

All that’s left along the fenceline is Swiss chard.

5 of the 6 pallet gardens have strawberries planted in them. I went ahead and pulled up the beans {they were suppose to be dried beans} and try planting them a little earlier next year.

The bean tepees were taken down. 🙁 The poles themselves were pretty brittle so I tossed them in the back woods and will make some new ones next year for my pole beans.

There’s Lucy the photo bomb dog. The tomatoes are still sputtering along in the greenhouse and the cabbage growing nearby is doing well.

Believe it our not I cleaned out the chicken coop/run last week. Now all I need to do is get the chicken wire over the top of the run and get some garden boxes made. The Swiss chard and kale plants are hanging in there.

The Girl had some peeps over on Saturday night and they picked a few pumpkins. Lucy and I will pick the rest of them this week.

And last but not least, the raspberry patch. I’m hoping to weed between the rows this week and trim the canes back as well.

It’s been busy around here lately, but I’m still having fun. And in the end, no matter how much I grow, I think enjoying what I do is the most important thing.

Well, this week started off really good. Buying things like milk, yogurt and fruit never tends to break the bank.

But then we needed more milk, The Girl wanted orange juice, I needed coconut and the HH wanted cottage cheese.

And then there was Costco.

Have you ever gone grocery shopping with a teenage boy before? Holy cow man, I don’t know if I was just super hungry too or if my mind was elsewhere, but Monkey Boy and I ended up spending a boatload at Costco, and we didn’t even stop for free samples.

And hello, tuna is expensive!!

Mr. Produce Guy – FREE

Thanks to Mr. Produce Guy, at least the lunch snacks were free. 😉

Plus, supplies to make my own potting soil. I also picked up a boatload of heirloom tomato plants at the Seattle Tilth sale.
