One Hundred Dollars a Month

I am your typical housewife living in high maintenance suburbia. I have a handsome husband, 2 kids and a flock of pet chickens. I try and feed my family with $100 a month. With the help of coupons, gardening and bartering I am able to squeeze the most out of our grocery budget and still manage to have a little fun along the way.

Simple Ways to Read More This Year

These past few years I’ve really tried to make reading a priority and increase the amount of books I’ve read. The thing I love about reading is that it forces you to relax and calm your mind, so it can be filled with all sorts of other things: humor, knowledge, advice. I forget how necessary and helpful it is for me to unwind through books, so making books a priority has been awesome. But I’ve been just as busy as ever, so sitting down to curl up with a book isn’t always an option {although I do still try to do that often!}. So here are some ways I’ve increased my reading over the last couple years:

  1. Audio books: This has been, hands down, the easiest way for me to increase the number of books I’ve read {or technically books that have been read to me, but I digress!}. I listen when I’m traveling. I listen when I’m gardening. I listen when I’m cooking. I listen when I’m taking a walk. So many thousands of chapters listened to via audio books! I just recently read that the number of books read per year has started to climb now that digital and audio books are more readily available and commute times have increased! Hoopla Digital is available for free via {some} local libraries as well as Amazon, which offers a 30 Day FREE trial for Audible with over 150,000 titles to choose and you can listen with the FREE Audible app on your smartphone or tablet.
  2. Digital books: Have you ever tried to rent eBooks from your library? Most have a limit to how many you can borrow at a time, but do not limit how many times per month you check books out! So the sky’s the limit. If you don’t have access to a library with a digital catalog, there are still great cheap or free options. Kindle Unlimited is an awesome service! For only $9.99 a month, you have unlimited access to hundreds of thousands of books. You can sign up now for a FREE 30 day trial of Kindle Unlimited, and cancel anytime during that 30 day period without being charged a dime. Plus, if you sign up now you have access to Audible.com for free for 3 months. So that means you have unlimited access to every single audio title they carry. Not too shabby! Also, each month, Amazon Prime members can download and keep one free book from their Kindle First selection of six pre-released picks.
  3. Book clubs: Join a book club or gather up some of your book-loving friends and start your own. It’s not only fun to explore some great books, it’s also fun to socialize while doing so {so I’ve heard}! You might only increase your book reading by one book, but that’s one more than before, so it might be worth it.
  4. Used book stores: Anytime I walk into a used bookstore, I want to buy so. many. books. It is an amazing place to get inspired to read. And there are often comfy couches or cute nooks where you can curl up and read until your heart’s content! Plus, just the smell alone of used books stores makes me happy.

And there are just a few ways to increase your page totals this year. Now I need to know what you’re reading. Lay some book recommendations on me. What are the last few books you’ve read? I heard that quote above once and it really got me to thinking. I have many hobbies but I’d never really thought about them defining me. I loved that concept. Now when I am doing something like gardening or rug hooking, I smile when I think about what it says about me. Those hobbies are things I LOVE to do but they also show that I am more patient than I give myself credit for and that I am willing to see a project through. It’s kind of fun to look at hobbies and think about how much they can tell you about a person. How much they can tell me about YOU, my dear readers!

I’d love for you to share your hobbies with all of us! How do you spend your free time? Are you a knitting wizard? Do you whittle like a pro? Do you dabble in pottery? Can you build a coffee table like a champ? Are you a photography-taking master? Could you teach all of us a thing or two about how to fight off someone using your karate skills? What do you do in your leisure? Could be an amazing hobby, could be a simple hobby, could be a super weird hobby! Like my mother’s hobby for instance:

She loves collecting “complimentary” items to the point I would actually say it’s a full-on hobby for her! {Like maybe she needs an intervention?} She loves to collect items on her daily walks, while dining at a restaurant, pretty much anywhere she can find something for free. Heck, she even has a few face masks from the Dr.’s office. Collecting is her hobby, and now I want to know YOUR hobby! And I’ll even pay you for that info! You share, you get a $20 Amazon gift card if your hobby is posted.

You’re probably wondering what the catch is, right? Well, there are a few requirements:

  1. Your hobby has to be submitted as a well written post. A one sentence “I make homemade kites” will not do. Now, 4-5 paragraphs about how you got into kite making, how long you’ve been doing it and the different types of kites you make WILL DO. That’s what I’m looking for! How long have you been doing it? Do you make money off of it or is it just for fun? Can you teach me how to do it?
  2. Be sure to include a little information about yourself, like your hobby’s backstory and how you got into it. Also, please include your first name and what state or country you are from.
  3. Your submission MUST have 5 HIGH QUALITY photos attached. You do not have to be a professional photographer, but your photos do need to be clear and well lit or I won’t be able to use them.
  4. All photos must be original, and they must have been taken by YOU. All photos you submit may be used on One Hundred Dollars A Month once submitted.
  5. Sadly, I might not be able to use every submission if I am overwhelmed by responses. A $20 Amazon gift card will only be awarded if the submission is published.
  6. If you have a blog and would like me to link back to it, please let me know, I’d be happy too.
  7. Although you must submit at least 5 pictures per submission, you can always include more. The more the merrier just in case I do not select them all.
  8. One submission per person.
  9. Send submissions via email to onehundreddollarsamonth @ gmail.com {remove the spaces} and be sure and put Show Me Your Hobby in the subject line.

I can’t wait to see all of your fascinating hobbies! Might just encourage me to take up a few new ones. Now get those cameras all warmed up and get to sharing!
