If there is one thing I’ve learned over the years about finding a good place to eat while on vacation, it’s that if you see a line forming out the door of any restaurant, bakery or deli, STOP and get in line.

Last week when we were in Boston, Massachusetts we kept passing people with Mike’s Pastry boxes. We walked by so many boxes that I actually started counting them.

Then it dawned on me, ASK SOMEONE where this place is. I did’t even care what they sold. All I knew was I was going to find the store and get me some of whatever they were selling, because clearly, everyone in town was getting something good there.

So I asked. And the next day my whole family marched right over to the shop {and stood in line!} and bought the best cannolis we’ve ever tasted.

We hurried over to the nearest park bench and dug in. I had a pistachio cannoli in case you were wondering. And guess what? They have an online store as well. Weeeeeee! I know what I’m asking for this Christmas.

If so, what and where. I might just have to go there someday.

We are SO new at all this…but my husband just turned our old wooden swing set into a chicken coop!! It took him a little over 2 months, just working whatever pretty evenings after work and some weekends he could.

“The first thing he did was take every.single.piece. apart. Yep. Long, tedious process. But when he was done he had a gazillion pieces of wood that he didn’t have to purchase! And he really did end up using a lot of it…plus purchasing some plywood, metal for the roof and chicken wire.

He had no plans, which might have been a mistake…but I’m so proud of him for working so hard to get this done! He put hundreds of hours into it…a lot of time! And, when you are in the rainy season (ha) and then spring and then snow (yep) it’s hard waiting for pretty days when you can get out there for a few hours after a long day of work! So, it took around 2 months to finish.”

Candace your husband did a fantastic job and I think any chicken would be happy to live there. Thank you so much for sending in your photos and have fun collecting all those fresh eggs.

DIY Wood Pallet Garden – Spinach, Lettuce, Celery, Strawberries and Boy Choy

Yesterday I was hand watering the pallet gardens and snapped a few pictures so you could see how some of the vegetables are growing.

Sadly everything in the garden has to be watered by hand because we have no drip irrigation or sprinklers set up. Luckily though we live in the Pacific Northwest and we typically don’t have super hot summers so I can get away with watering about every 3 days or so. Unless of course it rains, and then I can wait a bit longer.

I some celery in a pallet last year and it did great so I decided to grow it again this year. So far so good.

Even though I have no idea what variety of lettuce this is, I am in love with it. The leaves are super thick and the colors are amazing. I can’t wait to try it.

The spinach I started under grow lights is looking great too.

Here is what all six pallets look like right now. Pretty neat huh?

Even though I don’t think you’d be able to grow more food in a pallet than you would in a traditional garden bed, I still think it’s neat to try new things.
