Tonight The Girl and I will be watching Dirt! The Movie. While browsing movie titles, it was listed as a Top 5 Food Documentary. It highlights the good, bad, and the ugly of our farming practices, and examines human beings relationship with dirt, and how our need to alter it may lead to our ruining our biggest resource. Hmmm, I smell a plug for backyard gardening!

Since I plan on spending the better part of my year wrist-deep in dirt, I figured it might be worth my time to check it out.

Hi from Australia Mavis!

We have a great gardening show on TV here called “Gardening Australia” (available on ABC iview if you can get that app). The host Costa spent most of last year showing us how to develop the verge in front of our houses into vege and herb beds!

Fitness Friday – 16 Weeks to Go Until the Tacoma City Marathon

You are not going to believe this, but I have a new best friend. Her name is Jen and she works for Clif Bar. Jen heard about my plans to walk/run/jog the Tacoma City Marathon this May and she decided to send me some loot.

Holy nuts and berries!

I’m not exactly sure how Jen knew my favorite color was black, or that I would like the Kit’s Organic Berry and Almond Bars, but talk about a match made in heaven. Mavis + a free t-shirt and free food? Heck ya!

Look – Here I am, sharing my Clif Bars with some unsuspecting runners downtown yesterday. I tried to give them more but they mentioned something about not having enough pockets. I was totally frozen walking around outside in 30 degree temps in a t-shirt and shorts I didn’t argue with them.

So if you see my in my official Team Clif Bar t-shirt walking around passing out Clif Bars to active people in your community, come up and said Hi Mavis and grab yourself a free Clif Bar.

P.S. For those of you wondering what training plan I am following for this marathon, you can go HERE to see the training schedule. The 16 week program is designed for anyone who’s goal is to finish a marathon, and who isn’t concerned about how fast they finish. Clearly I am not trying to qualify for Boston, but I would still like to finish around 5:30. Believe it and achieve it people.

Raising Backyard Chickens – Goodbye Jersey the Giant

I knew I was going to be out in the backyard garden for awhile today, so I went ahead and walked over to the chicken run to let the hens out to forage.

After about 5 minutes I noticed Martha and Squirlly were still in the run and they were making little clucking noises. I thought maybe I had shut the gate behind me, and they couldn’t get out. So I walked over to check.

And that’s when I saw it.

A big ball of black feathers laying motionless on the ground.

Poor Jersey, {the chicken with the hen patterned baldness} looked like she had laid down underneath the coop to take nap and just never woke up.

This is the first chicken we have had die of natural causes. She was only about 2 1/2 years old, so I’m not sure why she died. I looked online and read that it’s not uncommon for backyard chickens to live as long as 8-10 years.

Poor Jersey. She was a good bird, she gave us lot’s of eggs and she was never any trouble.

She will be missed.
