I am your typical housewife living in high maintenance suburbia. I have a handsome husband, 2 kids and a flock of pet chickens. I try and feed my family with $100 a month. With the help of coupons, gardening and bartering I am able to squeeze the most out of our grocery budget and still manage to have a little fun along the way.

I am re- posting this strawberry bruschetta recipe tonight because The Girl and I picked a few handfuls of strawberries this afternoon and are planning on making this to go with dinner tonight.

This morning as I was pulling up a part of the English pea patch, I spotted a few volunteer purple potato plants growing in between the pea vines.
I don’t remember planting purple potatoes last year, so I think this batch was actaully left over from 2010. Holy cow! Who knew potatoes could hide that long underground? I had no clue.
After digging around in the dirt for a good 10 minutes, I ended up with 5 lbs, 8 oz of purple potatoes.
How exciting! I can’t wait to make these for dinner tonight. The Girl Who Thinks She’s a Bird is going to FLIP OUT when she sees these.

Even though it’s summertime and my backyard garden is in full swing, The Girl and I are still happily picking up free boxes of discarded produce every week. To be honest, I’m a little surprised we are still doing it. But as each week passes, I can see the value in doing this year round, especially when it comes to getting free greens for our pet chickens. Plus, it’s still fun to look inside the boxes to see what was deemed inedible.
This week our challenge is trying to figure out what we are suppose to do with all this broccoli. Figuring out what to do with the mushrooms was easy. I made the Handsome Husband an omelet, and then dehydrated the rest. All the other goodies were in manageable proportions this time around, so figuring out what to do with them was a piece of cake.
But the broccoli, what am I suppose to do with all the broccoli? Ideally, I’d like to be able to find some sort of canning recipe so we can in enjoy it later this winter. I’d freeze the free broccoli, but I don’t want to take up any prime real estate in the frozen foods section at Casa De La Mavis.
So now what? Do YOU have any ideas? Help!
