I am your typical housewife living in high maintenance suburbia. I have a handsome husband, 2 kids and a flock of pet chickens. I try and feed my family with $100 a month. With the help of coupons, gardening and bartering I am able to squeeze the most out of our grocery budget and still manage to have a little fun along the way.

Here’s what’s on the movie menu for tonight. Meryl Streep {one of my favorite actresses ever}, stars in The Iron Lady. She plays Margaret Thatcher, the first female Prime Minster of the United Kingdom. The story of Thatcher’s life is told through a series of flashbacks experienced by the woman long after she left office as the British prime minister with the longest tenure of the 20th century.

You see how she entered politics, met her husband, rose to power, earned the Iron Lady nickname, and was pushed from office by her own party. Because I’m kind of unfamiliar with her life and politics, I think it’ll be educational. It’s also free on Netflix right now!

I’ll let you know what I think!

Random Goodness from Around the WebThe beauty of being a blogger is that I have a platform to share whatever noteworthy topic that pops into my head.  Sometimes, the crazy stories I come across on the inter-web or the random thoughts that pop into my mind aren’t really noteworthy at all {on their own}.  They usually make me pause, laugh, or just plain roll my eyes and I go on about my day.  

So, without further ado, here’s this weeks edition of Random Goodness from Around the Web:

The Most Impressive Birthday Card Ever!

A Hallmark card purchased in 1970 for 25 cents, has been sent 96 times! Seriously! Bill and Steve, have been on top of their card-sending game for nearly half a century. These relatives are awesome and I want to be their friend. Now my only question is what will they do when they run out of room to sign it? Does the back have any free real estate? And who started it. This is so fun. Now I want to start one!

Changes the Meaning of Business Casual

First it was the stand up desk. Then it was the treadmill desk. Now we’ve moved onto a swim desk. We’ve collectively lost our minds.

UPDATE: Apparently it was an April Fool’s joke and a few thousand people bought into it. How long do you think we have to wait before it actually becomes a thing. Ha!

A House For the Price of a Car

This is the first residential house 3D-printed onsite with a mobile printer and a construction company printed it, an entire house, in 24 hours and it only cost $10,000. You read that right. $10k. This is AMAZING!! I’m blown away that a house was PRINTED. 3D printers are crazy awesome!

Hello friday, I’m so glad you’re here. Do you take your dog to the bank drive thru? Lucy loves to go for car rides and her favorite place to visit is the cookie machine at the bank.

All she has to do is let the tellers inside see her on the camera and POOF…. a cookie comes out of the slot. 🙂

She also LOVES going downtown and walking along the waterfront too. So much to see. So many other dogs to say hello to. She’s a good pup. And we are so lucky to have her.

Things You Should {and Shouldn’t!} Sell at a Garage Sale

I don’t know about you, but I love me a good garage sale. I also love putting on one big sale a year {one is my max! They are worth it but so much work!!}! That “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure” thing is spot on! But what are the treasures and what’s trash? Can you plop any old thing out on some tables and expect success? The answer is no! There are some super hot items that always sell like crazy, and some that should never see the light of day at your sale. I’ve listed the top 10 of each:

Best

  1. Furniture: Big furniture items alone can draw a crowd to your sale.
  2. Kids/baby items: Parents look for gently used items, so toss the stained and ripped stuff.
  3. Tools: power tools preferred
  4. Entertainment items: books, video games, DVDs
  5. Toys: clean and unbroken
  6. Bikes: preferably ready to ride
  7. Sports gear and equipment: treadmills, golf clubs, baseball bats, soccer cleats
  8. Designer anything: shoes, purses, perfume
  9. Clothing: but if you overprice it, it won’t sell.
  10. Appliances: Make sure they can plug them in to make sure they work.

Worst

  1. Stuffed animals: Because yet another stuffed bear is not what they’re there for.
  2. Used makeup: Yuck!
  3. Travel souvenirs: That shot glass from Vegas meant a lot to you, not a stranger.
  4. VHS tapes: Unless you’re including a VCR, these won’t sell.
  5. Used undergarments: I cannot tell you how many times I’ve seen these. Nope, Just nope!
  6. Used shoes: Unless they are brand new or nearly new, just donate them.
  7. Dirty items: If you can’t take them time to clean them, your customers certainly won’t take the time to buy them!
  8. Used toiletries: Half a bottle of shampoo anyone?
  9. Broken appliances: Some people think if they slash the price, someone will take it home and fix it. This is rare.
  10. Old TVs and clunky computer monitors: If it’s not flat screen, I wouldn’t even waste the space.

And there’s my advice. What sells well for you? What doesn’t move?
