I am your typical housewife living in high maintenance suburbia. I have a handsome husband, 2 kids and a flock of pet chickens. I try and feed my family with $100 a month. With the help of coupons, gardening and bartering I am able to squeeze the most out of our grocery budget and still manage to have a little fun along the way.

You might be a tightwad if… You use a mini spatula to get the last bit of lotion out of the bottle once your husband has thrown it in the trash.

lotionAnd then, to prove your point, you weigh said lotion {3.5 ounces} and then present the salvaged lotion to your husband and say “Look honey, there was still 3 weeks of lotion left in that bottle.”

The equivalent of a travel sized bottle of lotion saved from the trash. Yee-Haw!

Freezer Meal Recipe – Sweet BBQ Applesauce Chicken

Have you ever cooked your chicken in applesauce? If not, you’re missing out! This recipe takes BBQ chicken to the next level. The applesauce doesn’t overpower the chicken or make it too sweet {as I had originally feared}. It just keeps it moist and gives it just a tiny kick of sweetness. All you’ll have to do when you’re ready to prepare it is toss it in the crock pot and go on your merry way. You can used store bought applesauce and BBQ sauce for a quick meal, but I love the dish even more with the homemade varieties of both. I think it just gives the chicken a little extra somethin’ somethin’.

Sweet BBQ Applesauce ChickenIngredients

4 large boneless chicken breasts {I use  Zaycon chicken}
2 cups applesauce {I use my Homemade Applesauce Recipe}
2 cups BBQ sauce {I use my Quick and Easy BBQ Sauce Recipe}
1/2 cup onion, minced

Directions

To Freeze: Mix all ingredients after chicken together in a small bowl. Place 2 chicken breasts each in a gallon-sized Ziploc bag, pour sauce over chicken, zip it shut & and lay it flat in the freezer.

To Cook: When you’re ready to cook it, pull it out of the freezer and thaw in fridge for 24 hours; place in your slow cooker on low for 6-8 hours or high for 4-5 hours. You can also cook this from frozen if you forget to pull it out of the freezer {not that I’ve ever done that of course}. Just cook on the higher end of the cooking time suggestions.

“Use it Up, Wear it Out, Make it Do, or Do Without”

Oh. My. Word.  I just found this documentary online, available FREE to watch in full {about 14 minutes} here.  It shook me to the core.  It is such an amazing video on so many levels.  Really, do yourself a favor and watch all of it.

As you know, one of my goals for 2016 is to not buy anything new this year…and that includes clothing and shoes.  In the spirit of “use it up, wear it out, make it do, or do without,” I am not buying one single new thing, and honestly, I suspect that while I might have to really learn the lesson wants versus needs in a really raw and honest way, I won’t really NEED anything.

After watching this documentary, so many thoughts bubbled to the surface.  The first is how embarrassed I would be if this woman ever came to United States and saw how we lived.  We would fall from her pedestal quickly, I think.

Two, I couldn’t help but notice how beautiful she was–just as she is, no frills.  Her smile and her attitude went a long way on that too.  Three, I have an entirely new perspective on this whole not buying anything thing.  I don’t NEED anything, and I am not even sure if I know what it feels like to need anything.

If anything comes from this year, I hope it’s the ability to discern, without question wants versus needs.  #westernworldproblems
