Lucy and I took a nice long walk yesterday. With summer on it’s way out I guess this means our hour long leisure walks will be back on the calendar for the next 9 months.

As we were walking Lucy was fascinated with the storm drains. She wanted to stop at each one and inspect it for treasures.

I had my eyes peeled for fall foliage. The leaves are just starting to turn and pretty soon the streets will be covered with shades of orange, yellow and red. It makes me giddy.

My mother gave us a bottle of fancy shmancy balsamic vinegar last year and I finally used the last drop of it last night. I loved the bottle so much I decided to peel off the label and hang on to it. I’m not sure what I’m going to do with it yet, but it was just too pretty to throw away. Please tell me I’m not the only one who does this.

I guess it’s time to clean out the flower beds and break out the pruning shears. I adore this time of year and LOVE having an excuse to wear puffy coats and heavy socks without people looking at me like I am a weirdo.

And remember The Great Toilet Seat Debate last week? Well Mike Rowe, {remember him from Dirty Jobs?} did an episode testing out what happens when you flush with the toilet seat up with a black light.

Let’s just say… it’s totally gross. But if you don’t believe me, watch the video above.

Crock Pot Chili with Heirloom Tomatoes and Beer

If there is one thing my son LOVES, it’s chili. In fact I think he’d eat chili seven nights a week if I’d make it that often. This recipe was slightly adapted from the Crock Pot Cookbook Monkey Boy gave me for Christmas last year. The book has a ton of chili recipes in it, and I intend to make each and every one of them for him this fall.

Chili, it’s what’s for dinner.

Ingredients

2 tablespoons olive oil
1 onion, chopped
4 cloves garlic, minced
1-2 pounds lean ground beef or ground turkey
2 pounds heirloom tomatoes, chopped
1 cup frozen corn
1 can kidney beans, rinsed and drained
1 12 ounce bottle of dark beer
1/3 cup honey
4 ounce can diced green chilies
3 tablespoons chili powder
3 tablespoons hot pepper sauce
1 teaspoon curry powder

Directions

Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat and saute onions until lightly browned. Add garlic and saute for another minute.

Add ground beef or turkey, brown meat and drain fat.

Toss remaining ingredients into your Crock pot, add browned meat, stir and cook on low for 8 hours or high for 4 hours. Serve with cornbread.

How Often Do You Wash Your Bath Towels?

The HH and I are having a debate. I wash our towels bath towels about every 3 days, the HH thinks I am ~~OCD~~ slightly overdoing it. He thinks I could easily stretch it out to once a week maybe even two. The thing is that they are all damp and moist–and yes, they get hung up to dry, but they certainly don’t dry at the same rate they would on a air-circulating clothesline or in a heated dryer. Those bad boys have to harbor all sorts of bacteria, right?

I decided to hit the world wide web to prove a point to the HH, and wouldn’t you know it, 3 days or 3 uses IS EXACTLY the recommended time between washes. It’s funny, because I probably read that somewhere years ago, and it just stuck. According to several sites, towels have tons of dead skin cells, not to mention mold causing bacteria. Gross. What’s the point of cleaning your body if you are just going to shimmy it with a dirty towel afterward?

So, even though I feel slightly vindicated by my web search, I am reasonable enough to know that the interweb isn’t always the end all, be all. BUT, you guys certainly are :), so which camp do you reside in: Camp Mavis or Camp HH? Neither? Then, how often do YOU wash your bath towels?
