One Hundred Dollars a Month

I am your typical housewife living in high maintenance suburbia. I have a handsome husband, 2 kids and a flock of pet chickens. I try and feed my family with $100 a month. With the help of coupons, gardening and bartering I am able to squeeze the most out of our grocery budget and still manage to have a little fun along the way.

Monday morning we left my friend Heather’s house and headed up the coast to Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Which pretty much has the coolest historic downtown on the planet.

Settled in 1623 Portsmouth has an incredible amount of character. The sidewalks are lined with bricks, the streets are all pretty uneven and the old buildings are AMAZING. Seriously, everywhere you look is a little history lesson in the making.

I will never get tired of seeing old brick buildings trimmed in white or black.

Or snow covered paths. 😉

La Maison Navarre has scrumptious pastries if you are ever in the area. The Girl, who is a bit of a coffee snob, tried an affogato coffee and said it reminded her of Haagen Daz ice cream.

After a few hours in Portsmouth we headed north to Portland, Maine.

New favorite thing: Flatbread with corned beef, carrots, potatoes and cabbage with mustard. A combination I would have never come up with on my own BUT HOLY COW MAN….it was so good!

Oh. And just in case you didn’t know… Maine has a $0.05 redemption value on cans and bottles. So of course The Girl is always on the lookout when she walks around town. 😉

But the best deal/find of the day? A free wooden chair from a local thrift store. Apparently they had too many and needed to get rid of a few. 🙂

Treasures… they’re around every corner. You just have to look for them.

Sift Bake Shop in Mystic, Connecticut

If you’ve been following the blog this year than you know all about our goal of visiting 52 bakeries this year. {You can see all the bakeries we’ve visited so far HERE.} This time around we found our way to the small seaport town of Mystic, Connecticut.

Mystic is the home of Sift Bake Shop and let me tell you Bob, the pastries there were gorgeous!!! We happened to show up about an hour or so after the town’s annual St. Patrick’s Day parade and so there were a ton of people dressed up in green and having a good time catching up with friends and neighbors. The music from the pubs echoed throughout town and it was pretty amazing. 😉

The bake shop was bustling with customers but there was still plenty of goodness to choose from. Everything from croissants, bread, fine pastries, cookies, granola and they even had a sliders and ready made sandwiches to choose from.

The Girl had a slice of some sort of mango cream cake…

And I had a deliciously stuff macaron with raspberries and cream. It was the best pastry I’ve had so far this year and I totally wanted to have seconds but with more pastry shops to visit on this trip {and the lack of stretchy pants packed} I stuck to the one. 😉

Mystic, Connecticut…. We had a whale of a good time and can’t wait to go back.

Italians Get 500 Euros on Their 18th Birthday to Spend on Books

Powells BookstoreI read a lot of stories on the internet. As a blogger, I spend a lot of time online and so it pretty much comes with the job. And through my blogging years, I’ve read a lot of cool stories. But I think I’ve found one of my very favorites!

All Italians celebrating their 18th birthday between November 3rd, 2016 and December 31, 2017 {for now, although the program could be extended!} will now be gifted 500 euros to spend on cultural items like books, concert tickets, theater tickets, cinema tickets, museum visits, trips to national parks and more, as part of an initiative by the Italian government to enrich the lives of its citizens.

“The initiative sends a clear message to youngsters….it reminds them how important cultural consumption is, both for enriching yourself as a person and strengthening the fabric of our society,” says parliamentary undersecretary Tommaso Nannicini.

Um, AWESOME! Seriously, how cool is that. I love everything about this and I so wish we’d adopt something like that here in the states! So now the question is, if you were gifted that with those requirements, what would you buy? Let’s say you could only spend it on books, what books would you buy? What are your very favorites through the years? And do you think this program is as awesome as I do?
