I am your typical housewife living in high maintenance suburbia. I have a handsome husband, 2 kids and a flock of pet chickens. I try and feed my family with $100 a month. With the help of coupons, gardening and bartering I am able to squeeze the most out of our grocery budget and still manage to have a little fun along the way.

The Imitation Game is on the menu tonight. I found it free on Netflix and it had a great rating. I’m a big Benedict Cumberbatch fan, so I suspect I’m going to love it!

It’s about Alan Turing, a real-life war hero and pioneer of modern-day computing, who saves millions of lives by cracking Germany’s so-called unbreakable code during WWII. Looks fascinating.

It’s that time again. You ask, and I pretend to know things and answer your burning questions. It really is so much fun to open my inbox and see the wide variety of questions you guys have. Reminds me that my readers are so diverse and pretty dang awesome. So keep those questions coming and I’ll keep racking my brain for answers. Hi Mavis, In the past year or so you mentioned a paint color that you have used that always seems to work no matter the room, do you recall the name of the color and the brand of paint that you used.

Yes! Nancy my favorite go to color is Hopsack paint by Valspar. You can find it at Lowe’s. My friend Girly Girl who is an interior designer who helps put together custom and model homes uses this color religiously.  I also recommend using Floetrol when painting to avoid brush strokes {if you are painting trim}.

Hi Mavis, I was wondering if you could possibly do a segment on all of your go to type of recipes and what I mean by that is your basics like tortillas, pancake mix, bread, broth,rolls etc. I follow you all of the time but I wanted to print them and have them hanging in my kitchen in one place like inside of a cabinet. Thanks, I am really just too lazy to look them up!

No. And honestly, uploading every single receipt would not only drive me bonkers, but I don’t like the idea of yet another company {other than my credit card} knowing EVERY purchase I make. To me, uploading grocery receipts occasionally to iBotta is one thing, but every receipt for every purchase? No thanks. But maybe other people have tried the receipt hog app. Anyone care to chime in?

You know that feeling when you walk into a pastry shop and you want to order one of everything? Ya. Well, that’s pretty much how The Girl and I felt when we walked into Inès Patisserie in Seattle, Washington a few days ago. I had been there once before when I tagged along on one of the HH’s business trips to the city and knew I’d want to go back the next time we were up in that area. So I did.

The selection is not huge. But I kind of think that’s the point. Just a few offerings made fresh each day along with a full coffee bar so you can stop by, relax and get a bite to eat on your way to and from work.

A hot chocolate costs $5 and it’s the real deal. Like as in shaved chocolate. Freakin’ awesome.

I counted 13 offerings, and that includes biscotti. Well, to be fair I also noticed omelets and crepes on the menu board as well. Gaaaaa. If I lived around the corner I’d go everyday. And I’d have to start wearing stretchy pants and I totally wouldn’t even care.

Clean, simple and not too crowded. Just the way I like it.

If you are ever in the area… stop by. You’ll be so glad you did.
