Hello Tuesday.

Are there any bird experts out there? I need your help. I wrote about Robin this morning over on Dig for Your Dinner and I could use some advice. Also, have you ever been to Coeur D’alene, Idaho? The HH and I are planning a trip there and I could sure use your suggestions. I’ve been there once, but it was about 18 years ago and we brought the babies along and didn’t get to do much sight seeing. Any ideas would be AWESOME.

Fresh Air for Lucy’s Baby Chicks…

Maybe it’s weird for a dog to love chickens but please don’t tell Lucy because she’s a total natural in the mother hen department.

Lucy is especially fond of the Silver Cochin chick {last week we thought she might be a White Cochin because we didn’t see any sign of black feathers}. If you look closely you can see hints of black on her wing though so all is well. She’s the first one Lucy checks on each day and it’s totally adorable.

Look at the tail feathers starting to pop out on the Sicilian Buttercup chicken.

And lastly, the Light Brahma. This bird cannot keep her beak shut to save her life. Seriously, she’s a total chatterbox during the daytime. I’ve never seen {or heard} anything like it. Luckily though the chicks have been pretty quiet at night when we’re all trying to sleep {they are in our laundry room right now}.

March 28th, 2016 – National Weed Appreciation Day

Have you ever stopped to notice that there is a holiday {or day of observation} dedicated to just about everything?  Holy buckets, if we actually go to celebrate every single one of them, it would be one non-stop party.  Still, it seems a waste to not at least pay my respects to a couple of the top contenders {I’m talking to you National Donut Day!}  

This year, I’ve picked a couple of my favorites each month to celebrate.  Maybe I’ll hang streamers, maybe I’ll send cards…maybe I’ll just go ahead and pour myself a tall glass of whatever we’re supposed to be celebrating.  Afterall, life is short, and our National calendar is full.  Let’s make the most of it, shall we?

Okay, trust me, I did my homework on this one, before I went willy-nilly suggesting you celebrate weed {here in Washington, National Weed Day could mean different things}.

Luckily, for this little gardener, the day really is about celebrating the pesky little interlopers in your garden.  Why in the heck would we celebrate weeds in the garden? Well, it turns out, quite a few are actually edible:

  1. Dandelions.  I’m sure we all kicked our fair share of dandelions when we were kids, but they are actually edible.  The leaves can be tossed into a salad {the smaller they are, the less bitter}.  The flowers are edible too.  You can even fry them, if you are looking for a little bit more flavor.
  2. Purslane.  This stuff is actually the bane of my existence in the garden, and I had no idea it was edible!  Not only is it edible, it packs a punch.  It has more Omega-3’s than any other leafy veggie.  It’s apparently got a bit of a peppery flavor.
  3. Clover.  Clover can be added raw to salads or made into a tea.
  4. Chickweed.  Chickweed supposedly tastes like spinach, and can be eaten raw or cooked.
  5. Pigweed.  These are usually the big dogs in the yard/garden {also known as wild amaranth}.  The leaves are edible.
  6. Lamb’s Quarters.  Also known as wild spinach.  Who knew?!
  7. Mallow.  Mallow leaves can be eaten raw or cooked–you can also use them to make tea that can soothe digestive ailments.

weedsDisclaimer time:  Make sure you accurately identify the weeds before you go topping them with ranch dressing and munching them down.  I don’t need any National Weed Appreciation Day poisonings on my conscience!

How We Spend Less Than $100 a Month on Groceries

How did you do this week with your grocery budget? Did you go over budget because of Easter? Is your fridge packed with leftovers?

I figured if the peeps behind Hungry Man dinners can make freezer meals… so could I. Now the boys will have something homemade to eat the next time I take off on one of my adventures. Well, if they take the time to heat it up that is. If you have a ton of leftovers you should think about freezing a few of your extras for a busy weeknight. It takes just a minute or two but you’ll be so happy you did later on.

Last week milk, chocolate milk and orange juice were on sale for $0.99 each. Spinach $2.00 a bag {expensive if you ask me} banana’s $0.59 a pound, Gala apples $0.99 a pound, a few mushrooms for omelets, discounted day old garlic bread {I tossed it in the freezer for later} and a friday free bottle of orange juice. It was a quick and easy trip.

It’s no big secret the boys like junk food. So when I found deals on buttered microwave popcorn {gross} Pop Tarts {double gross} and bottled orange juice I stuck them in my Amazon cart. No biggie. We all deserve a little treat once in awhile even if it’s filled with preservatives.

By the way, if you haven’t tried Quinn Popcorn yet… it’s AWESOME and so much better than that fake butter stuff. Here’s the prices I was able to get on the above products:

Amazon prices can change super quick, so when I find a good subscribe and save deal on something, I add the item to my subscribe and save order for the following month. I like the flexibility of being able to add items to my list as well as being able to delete them before a shipment goes out. Sometimes I order toiletry products, sometimes food, but if I can’t find at least 5 items to get the additional 15% off discount then I’ll usually just cancel the whole order.
