I am your typical housewife living in high maintenance suburbia. I have a handsome husband, 2 kids and a flock of pet chickens. I try and feed my family with $100 a month. With the help of coupons, gardening and bartering I am able to squeeze the most out of our grocery budget and still manage to have a little fun along the way.

Hello Thursday! Sweet Lucy baby and Boo the 23 year old stuffed monkey took a siesta on the couch yesterday with the fan blowing on them. It was the cutest thing ever. 😉 Our furry friends, what would we do with out them?

Today is going to rock…. You want to know why? Today is day 2 of the vegetable stand build and the HH promised me he’d have it finished by Saturday so I could sell some extra cucumbers at the end of our driveway. 🙂 🙂 🙂 I’m excited!

Gardening in New England – My First Big Harvest and the Backyard Vegetable Garden Tally for 8/1/2018

Yesterday the HH and I headed out the garden to check on the vegetables and blueberry patch and boy were we surprised when we got out there! Finally, something more exciting than Swiss chard and turnips were ready to harvest.  He had to set up a ladder just to harvest the beans. I’ve always preferred growing pole beans over bush beans and for the first time ever, our beans plants reached over 8 feet tall. HOLY COW.  Maybe next year I need taller poles.

Parisian cucumbers? Yes please! Those go for a pretty penny at Costco…. Now we have our own supply. And the polka dot glasses? They are totally dorky, I know. But they fit so snug on my face I can’t help but wear them all the time. Maybe they’d look better if I was tan, and wearing all black?

There is something so satisfying about pulling an onion out of the ground. Who needs cable tv when you can pull stuff out of the ground? Seriously.

First tomato harvest. I couldn’t resist plucking a few green zebra tomatoes off the vine…. There are so many out there, these can ripen on the windowsill.

First quart of blueberries. The HH lost interest in picking berries after about 8 seconds. Said they were too much work. 😉 Whateva. I’m stashing them in the freezer until I have enough for jam.

I’m thinking a cold beet salad might be on the menu for later this week.

Oh, and the cucumbers…. I guess pickling season is right around the corner. I might can some relish with this batch!

The backyard vegetable garden tally of 2018:

Beets 14 pounds 11 ounces

Blueberries 1 pound 10 ounces

Cucumbers 12 pounds 2 ounces

Green Beans 1 pound 2 ounces

Green Onion/Scallions 12 ounces

Lettuce 11 ounces

Onions 3 ounces

Peppers 5 ounces

Sugar Snap Peas 1 pound 2 ounces

Swiss Chard 5 pounds 14 ounces

Tomatoes 2 pounds 3 ounces

Turnips 9 pounds 3 ounces

Zucchini 1 pound 13 ounces

Total Food Harvested in 2018 54 Pounds 7 Ounces

Total Eggs Collected in 2018 {with 7 hens} 0 {the ladies are just 14 weeks old}

Total spent growing 54 pounds 7 ounces of food this year $811.00 {about $15.00 a pound so far!} 😉 The goal is to get this down to $1.00 a pound or less by the end of the season. What did I spend my garden money on this year you ask? Well, $399 on Manny and the rest on seeds, compost, grow light bulbs and small garden tools/supplies.

The HH Builds a Chicken Coop for Lucy’s Babies

When Lucy’s 7 babies arrived in Early April, we knew we knew the little Eglu Go Coop we had would only be big enough to hold the chicks for about 12 weeks or so. The Eglu is designed for 4 full grown chickens and so with the chickens getting bigger each day, we decided early it was time to build the ladies a full sized chicken coop.

The coop took about a week and a half {of working a few hours a day} to build. Ideally, I think you’d be able to build the coop in one weekend, but with temps between 85-90 degrees and 95% humidity, our enthusiasm for building the coop kinda got zapped after about an hour or two working outside. 😉

The chickens though, they didn’t seem to mind. We’d let them out of the Eglu at 5 am each morning and they’d run off into the wooded area along the property line and hangout there foraging and building dust baths until it was time to “come home” at around 8 pm each night.

The plans called for 3 roosting bars, but for now, we have just 2 installed for our 7 hens. If needed, we can always add the third bar. We also still need to add the hardware cloth around the windows, and the vents but you know what? I think the coop turned out just as I imagined it would. 🙂

In the end, although I would have loved to have had a white chicken coop, I decided to paint the coop the same color as our house. It was only when I grabbed the half empty can of house paint the previous owners left behind that I noticed the name of the paint… New Pilgrim Red. Can you believe that?

Clearly….. it was meant to be. 😉

Today is a new day, and you can bet your last dollar I’ve already got the next honey-do project lined up: A vegetable stand for the end of our driveway. And I couldn’t be more excited.
