Penny Pinching Tip – Freeze SOS Pads

I love SOS pads–they keep my cookie pans all pristine and nice, but I hate that you basically use them once and then the next time you wet them down, they are all brown and fally-aparty {that’s a real term}.

BUT, did you know that if you throw a used SOS pad into a ziploc bag and keep it in the freezer, you can basically triple the amount of use you will get out of it? Yep, I wouldn’t lie about this. The best part is that when you pull it out of the freezer and re-wet it, it’s still blue and normal looking {as opposed to rusty brown and disgusting}. This little tip means I’ve basically had the same box of SOS pads since 2005.

Have you ever tried to freeze your SOS pads? Works like a charm, right!?

I couldn’t’ pass up a flat of loganberries from Spooner farms. When I stopped by their berry stand they only had 2 flats {loganberries are kind of rare and go quick} available. We made jam and froze the rest to enjoy during the winter months. {I’m thinking a batch of muffins and a loganberry pie will be perfect later on}. If you’ve never had loganberries before they are a cross between a blackberry and a raspberry and DELICIOUS.

Zaycon Fresh – Chicken Free with Credit

There were a TON OF PEOPLE picking up their Zaycon orders last week in the church parking lot. Wowza! I saw one woman have 3 cases placed in her car. We didn’t do anything special with ours this time around, just bagged it up, 2 chicken breasts per quart sized zip baggie and toss them into the freezer.

So one of the things I was craving during my 30 living off a emergency food supply challenge was Nutella Filled Cinnamon Rolls. Well, I made them on Saturday morning and they were as good {if not better} than I had remembered them. Needles to say they are all gone now. 🙂

If you have access to loganberries, I highly suggest you make a batch of loganberry jam. {I’ll post the recipe soon}.

Another thing I made last week was homemade strawberry ice cream. This was a new recipe for me and the result was a cross between a Haagen Daz sorbet and regular strawberry ice cream. The HH is in LOVE with it. {I’ll post this recipe soon as well}.

Smoothies…. The Girl and I made of ton of them last week.

The Girl got a hankering for eggplant parmesan and brussels sprouts {weird combo I know} and picked up the supplies to make the dish {and paid for it herself} after work on day last week. She did not share.

Which was fine because I was stuffing my face with PB&J on toast.

Have you ever made homemade tortillas before? This recipe is about 10 million and 52 times better than store bought. My family raves about them every time I make them.

And last but not least, Monkey Boy’s pasta. I wouldn’t want to forget that.

Mavis Butterfield | Backyard Garden Plot Pictures 7/5/15

It has been a busy week in the garden. Even though the temps have been hovering around 90 this past week, my enthusiasm for growing vegetables both in the front AND the backyard has not wavered.

For some strange reason our romaine lettuce is still alive and kicking. We’ve had side salads practically every night and it’s been wonderful.

The cilantro plants are getting ready to go to seed. Have you collected cilantro seeds before? I think I might give it a go this year.

My best guestimate has us about 2 weeks away from homegrown tomatoes!!! BRING.IT.ON.

I don’t know what to say about our garden boxes anymore. I mean really, they were only planted 5-6 weeks ago and just look at them. Good soil makes all the difference I tell you. All the difference.

I am happy to announce the edging in the lower garden is finished! I have another 5 yards of Tagro on order for the end of this week and I’m looking forward to getting the beds built up. {I’m also looking forward to having the kids shovel and HAUL the Tagro up the hill}. 😉

I think we might be harvesting cocozelle squash by the end of the week. 🙂

Sadly, about half of our cabbage plants will have to be pulled up this week. As you probably already know, cabbage is a cold weather vegetable and does not thrive in the heat.

About 12 heads are going to seed. Which is a total bummer of course because I was planning on making a HUGE batch of sauerkraut this summer. Luckily, I still have plenty of cabbage seeds left though and will be starting a new batch for fall planting this week or next.
