With the help of coupons, gardening and bartering I am able to squeeze the most out of our grocery budget and still manage to have a little fun along the way.

Random Goodness from Around the WebThe beauty of being a blogger is that I have a platform to share whatever noteworthy topic that pops into my head.  Sometimes, the crazy stories I come across on the inter-web or the random thoughts that pop into my mind aren’t really noteworthy at all {on their own}.  They usually make me pause, laugh, or just plain roll my eyes and I go on about my day.  

So, without further ado, here’s this weeks edition of Random Goodness from Around the Web:

Gives New Meaning to Special Delivery

What would the world be like if everyone loved doing their job as much as this mailman from Texas who was caught dancing on the job? Give it a watch. It’s sure to bring a smile to your face. And can we all admit he kills those high kicks! Ha!

Such Glamorous Jaywalkers

What do you do when someone calls the cops about some high school students blocking a main street in Bangor, Maine for a prom photo? Well if you’re officers with the Bangor Maine Police Department, you join in on the fun instead of writing them tickets! Accessorizing with gun belts and bullet-proof vests instead of heels and corsages, two officers who took the call decided to revisit their prom photos and latched onto the group pic. After offering a bit of advise (keep your hands to yourself, leave other people’s things alone, and be kind to one another), they went on their merry way and the students went on to dance the night away. So fun!

Where in the World is Your Doppelganger?

There’s a YouTube channel called Twin Strangers that claims everyone has seven twin strangers in the world. What do you think? Are there really at least seven other people on Earth that look almost exactly like you? I’ve had people come up to me through the years thinking I looked exactly like someone else they knew. I’m sure the same has happened to you. But this video shows matches so similar it’s almost scary! Long lost sisters, maybe? Do you have a doppelganger? Ever met them?

Maybe Don’t Stop and Smell These Roses

Did you know wooden roses were a thing? The roses pictures above are made of wood. I’m blown away. They look amazingly realistic! I guess people sell wooden flowers of all sorts and in the Netherlands or to Belgium, souvenir stands will sell you wooden tulips because they’re a whole lot easier to get through customs (and last a lot longer) than the real deal. Who knew?

Hello Friday! A high of 85 is in the forecast for today and tomorrow. Eeek! Luckily though the temps are supposed to drop to 55 and rain on Sunday so we won’t totally melt. On the agenda for this weekend:

  • Rest my eyes. They hurt. I’m not sure if it’s because of everything is in bloom in the backyard or I’m spending too much time staring at a screen.
  • Finish flower bouquets {the wool kind}
  • Continue working on clearing the {future} corn patch
  • Laundry
  • Make a batch of scones or muffins
  • Clean, clean clean

How about YOU? Going clubbing? Hopping a flight to Paris? Scrubbing the bathtub?  Doing anything exciting this weekend? I want to hear about it!

The Best Irish Brown Bread Recipe

When I visited the King Arthur Flour Campus in Norwich, Vermont a few weeks ago with my list of specialty flours in hand, I knew the first recipe I was going to try out once I got home was their version of Irish brown bread. If you’ve ever tasted a true Irish brown bread before then you know it’s an extremely hearty loaf with a lot of texture. Something that in my opinion, is hard to duplicate.

Or so I thought. This recipe, it’s the real deal. A hunk of this bread with a bit of jam or butter slathered on the sides, is truly a meal in itself. It’s so hearty, it might even grow hair on your chest and inspire you to go out and chop wood or something. I made my loaf four days ago and stored it in an air tight container, and it still tasted great when I had a slice this morning with my cup of tea.

This recipe is a keeper, and one that I know I’ll be making on a weekly basis during the long and cold months of winter. Thumbs up, five stars, you totally need to make this. Like now.

Ingredients

4 cups King Arthur Irish-Style Flour
3 tablespoons sugar
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon baking soda
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 1/2 cups buttermilk {I improvised}
2 tablespoons melted butter

Directions

Preheat the oven to 400°F. Lightly grease a baking sheet with butter {because butter makes everything better}. In a large mixing bowl, stir together the flour, sugar, salt, baking soda and baking powder.

Make a well in the dry ingredients and pour in the buttermilk and the butter. Stir together until blended.


Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead until it all holds together. Form the dough into a large ball and place it on the prepared baking sheet. Cut a deep cross in the top of the loaf to ward off the devil. {It’s an Irish thing, and it makes the loaf look nice after you bake it}.

Bake the loaf for approximately 35 – 40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Remove the bread from the oven, cool it on a rack. Enjoy!
